1. indulgence- a pardon; released a sinner from performing the penalty that a priest imposed for sins

3. Secular and the individual challenged Church authority. Some rulers began to challenge the Church's political power. Merchants resented paying church taxes to Rome
4. Protestantism- branch of Christianity. Developed out of the Reformation
